What you see is the flower of a parasitic plant.
The story goes as follows:
Mike the mycorrhiza and Penny the pine tree have a nice relationship going where Penny feeds Mike and Mike helps Penny get stuff she can't reach. One day G, the ghost plant comes along and says "Hey Mike! Can I live with you and Penny? I promise to help out." Mike agrees and soon Penny and Mike are helping G but when Mike asks G to help out it just grins and goes "I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm here to stay."
